Shadow Work

 1.1 Inner Child

  • What pains from my childhood shaped who I am now?
    • my father wanted to support my talents, but he was irresponsible. my mother wanted me to be the best but she was insecure. they were always fighting. we were always in the middle of it all. i remember snippets... but I remember the smell of alcohol and the sound of my mother sobbing. but I remember that all of that had to be under wraps because there is an image of a loving family they'd want to protect. and that was I guess, frustrating to me as a child. because we go to church, they know what's right and wrong, but they never seemed to get it right and they almost never get along, and when they do, it doesn't really last. i remember feeling happy.. kilig.. when things were god between them because that is so rare. there is always so much hate and frustration, maybe not towards each other, but towards the life they ended up living. they love each other, I know that, that's why my dad kept drinking because he can't give her the life she wants, and that's why my mom kept crying. to hep with the facade, my mom attempted with great gusto to prune her children to perfection. i remember the late school nights that we had to get all the answers to her mock exams perfect or else we won't have any sleep, or TV breaks. i remember crying because she'd hit me with a ruler because I didn't know how to read the time. the clock faces mocking me, and her voice gruelling, the ruler poised to make the hit. she would nudge the side of my forehead harshly, ''ayaw pagbinugo''. i remember going to school every morning, we would commute, and she'd sit behind me, and then she'd hit my back, subtly so people won't notice, because I wasn't sitting upright. when there is something that makes her angry at me, she never talks to me about it outright, it is always a subtle pinch, a silent glare, or a beating when we arrived home. i remember always being compared to classmates, cousins, relatives, girls my age... so much expectations, everything had to be a competition. i always had my hair done in different hairstyles because another kid's mom was really good at giving her braids. the Christmas parties are crazy, unconsciously, we always had to outdress one another. oh all the insults I had just because I placed second in the honor roll. my grandfather on my dad's side is a pastor. my mom's side is the more rowdy one. so whenever we are at my mom's side of the family, we'd be more relaxed, because we are always told to act a certain way, always having to watch what you are saying and doing. once I spent a couple of weeks there and when I went back to my mom's place, my lola said, ''mura kag santos na wala kaihi'' she meant I was holding back who I really was, in her eyes maybe a little bitch.. i remember always having to dim down because some things are improper. all the books or comics I wasn't allowed to read, all the contests I wasn't allowed to join because they are sinful. shamed for dressing up, but not allowed to dress down because I wouldn't look nice. shamed for speaking up because why did you have to say that you are destroying a routine... i lie a lot about my experiences so I could look cool. i remember all those lies still. they haunt me. they haunt me because they probably realized by now I made it all up. i look at my 12-year old self and see a girl so young,, but then she is so bent and twisted and confused and just desperate for approval. i don't think I remember cuddling with my mom. i remember the scent of her clothes, the taste of the food she makes, the sound of her steps.. how she prepares to go to work every day putting on her makeup.. but I don't think I remember cuddling with my mom.

  • What younger version of myself was my favorite? Why?
the one who drew a lot even though her dad told her her imaginary friend looked like a demon. the one who played make-believe with her sister in the yard, the one who wrote songs, the one who was allowed to sit down with her legs spread like a boy because she thought it looked cool sitting down like her dad. i felt like those are the versions of her that were most true.
  • What patterns do I have now that I also had as a child?
the pretending.. the people-pleasing. always yes yes yes. how do I tell people that hey that is not who I am, I was just pretending.

1.2 Grief

"Grief is also a window into hope, resilience, strength, rebirth, curiosity, enduring, and adapting to change."

Think about any perceptions you have around grief.
Reflect on any ways you've wanted to rush through grief or bypass grieving.
Consider holding grief gently with compassion and tenderness.
Invite yourself to the grieving process as sacred.

You can grieve people, paths, possibilities, and parts of self.

I guess when I think about grief, and how I dealt with it in the past, I was always placing myself as victim. Always pitying myself and displaying that.. and rendering myself unable to carry out responsibilities, unable to carry on and when I do and it doesn't work out, I blame it on that grief. It's because I lost this and that. I believe I have settled with my parents' death pretty recently. I have learned that a lot of things are not their fault and I don't have to see myself as pitiful because so many people stood up in their place and helped us. Controversial, but maybe, just maybe, things are better off this way. The ideal of having loving parents and healthy parent-kid relations is just that, an ideal. I am not glad that they are dead, of course not! Maybe all that fighting could have stopped, maybe they saw us become adults and achieve milestones, maybe we could have shared stories as friends, so many things that maybe could have happened, but their passing taught us so much. that life is hard, and we only have each other so even though it can be too much sometimes, we have to stick together. If they were around, I would not see this side of life and I would have taken a lot of things for granted.

Also recently, a couple of scenarios opened up a new wound to grieve. It was on my mind in the past but in a different way. That I am lucky to be alone. and that I would rather not be in a relationship if it would only lead to stress. I avoid conflicts too much... it's a problem. I don't like to communicate about them. I know I should work on that but old habits don't die that easy. and so that problem is part of the reasons why I don't even want to consider stepping into relationships. I think I am a romantic person. I love love! And I know I can love so much and so beautifully, and so I feel like I would be completely devastated if it won't be met in the same way. but anyway, I am almost 30. My youth has left me. The topic of my singleness now sting a bit when before I was proud that I am alone and independent. There are moments when I thought, hmm, a husband would be helpful for this... or hmm it would be nice if I could talk to a husband about this and that... or just hmm, it would be nice if I could ask a husband for help on this and that... Before, I always thought I could do all things on my own. She was so confident! I am not anymore. I feel like I am rotting away, all of my potential going down the drain. No dreams in progress, no love in sight, no coin saved up... it is something to grieve, but it is also my own doing.

So, how do I peer into this grief window and see hope?

Gab Elementary Graduation

It's been 10 days since my son walked the stage and put a cap on his elementary years. Why do I not feel grand about it? I did not do anything remarkably special on the day, just what is expected. In my head, I thought, this is just one of those days. It's going to happen again in a couple of years, and a couple of years after that. Almost everybody graduates, right? I did not get him a nice gift. I bought him a phone though-- because he is going to be in high school, and the kid would need a phone. We did not have a special dinner. I did not even get him cake. Lolo gave a bit of money to buy a sort of special dinner, then we ate, and then everyone went ahead to do their own thing.  The day before, he was focused enough to remind me that his toga and uniform needs to be ironed and that they would need a corsage, and 2 garlands. Maybe he is excited, he never really shows interest in school, or he never really tells me about it. But on that day, he made it a point to tell me without me having to ask him. The night before, he tells me I need to wake him up early, as early as that time of the National Achievement Test and when I did wake him up early, he was hurrying me because he says he can't be late. ''6:45, we have to be there at 6:45'', he says. We were one of the few ones that arrived that early and the ceremony ended up starting at 8:30. He did not say much to his classmates, but he was surrounded by a few of the boys as they watched him play a game on his new phone. They were nice to him and they would talk to me and tell me what he's like in class. When the teacher made them stand in line to get ready for the procession, he kept gesturing to me, telling me that I need to be next to him and that I have to prepare the garlands, like he knows what he's doing and I don't. He did not tell me that when we reach the stage with the other graduates and parents, that they would place the garland over their parents' necks and give them a hug. He did not tell me that he had all the songs memorized and he expressively sings them so well, I could see it in his face. He graduated with an award, he did not tell me that. Best in Mathematics. I am never known for my math talents-- never had any, but he is best in math. In the end, he was in a hurry to get back home, and while so many other parents were busy taking photos, we did not get to take a single one. Is playing it cool like this a sign that he is not so little anymore? A part of me does not want to embarrass him, and he never really shows interest in school. But maybe, just maybe... his little Best in Math medal means he shows up more than he cares to admit. And maybe, I'm just a mom a little bit unwilling to accept that time isn't gonna slow down. Gosh, parenthood. It's a really crazy thing, isn't it?

RN 2024

 What's in a name?

We are known for many of them—the ones we were born with, the ones our mothers call us, depending on whether they are in a loving mood or if they can't find the pair of scissors. The ones our friends call us, some nice, many loathsome. The ones reserved for family and sweethearts, and of course, ones that dignify us.

Our brother is born Sheen Michael Centina Mañego.

Tisoy when he was a toddler, for he had astonishingly fair skin.

Opaw a little later when he sported that adorable buzzcut evident in most of his childhood photos.

Kuya Sheen to both younger sister and nephew.

Idol, Bossing, Pare, and a lot of other cool ones in his many circles I couldn't bother to find out.

Kiel... oh am I so eager for you all to know more about Kiel!

BUT, today he earned one more name-- a leaf to his laurel.

RN.

Scanning his birth name amongst the thousand others who now share this honor was an emotional and stressful task, because what if he wouldn't be on it? A more undesirable tag would be spoken by hateful people. And it is a big sister's job to worry about these things among others. Oh but when we did, it was right there, next to number 18326...

MAÑEGO, SHEEN MICHAEL C.

All the things he had to overcome to achieve this, even all the things he didn't, they now look so small in comparison. Praise the Lord.

Now people would identify you with this shiny new name, but my favorite would always be, Dong. Dong Sheen.

why a woman needs a man

I found that a woman would find a husband useful when she needs someone to explain to other men that she needs something done without these other men thinking it's a silly idea. This sort of thing probably happens so often to other women as well but in my case, it is for my dillemmas with house builds and/or improvement. In my head they all would work perfectly and I know exactly how one should do them. Plus they'd look pretty. But seeing I have no or inadequate physical skill, I seek to employ help from skilled gentlemen or other men in the house. It is their "job", is it not? Kidding. Anyway, the scenario usually goes like this, I see something i'd like to fix, I get an idea on how to do it, I seek help from a man with a saw and a hammer, I tell him about how I want the job to be done and he looks at me like I grew two extra heads. When I see that look of confusion mixed with a bit of misogyny, I usually just play the, "Oh but I don't know, you know better, I'm just saying." Just to get it over with. And the end result is almost always sloppy. And so I thought, a husband would be really useful for these kinds of things. Not because he'd do the job for me and it'd be free, (I mean, that’s not too bad, if he could do it then yayy but I wouldn't expect too much) but he could talk to other men in their own language you know? Somewhere in the likes of-- my wife is a bit crazy but she wants this so it has to happen, or he can say the idea is his and it will all be a different story, the work would be so agreeable like it's the best idea they have ever heard. Almost anything that comes from a man's mouth is reasonable and dare I say, awesome to other men. But when a brilliant idea comes from a woman? She is crazy and thinks too much of herself. Like, who gave her permission to speak??

Anyway, I think that would be a good use for a husband. Or I could just learn building-- that seems easier.

28

I am 28, and shit is not figured out.

When I was around 12, 15 maybe, I remembered thinking that people who were 27-- 28, were old.

"That's so close to 30. 30 is old."

It's funny because I haven't really thought of myself as old until I realized that wow, I am 28. Am I old?

And then, there's this list. List of things I should have already done by now. It's an exhausting list of dreams and tenets that are supposed to mean you are of value. A vicious list of standards that humans created to make one feel better than the other. Maybe that was not entirely its purpose, though. I am just an insecure 28-year-old that haven't really gone through this list. And ironically, the most positive realization out of all of this is that everything is my fault.

Everything is my fault. That's a good thing to know! You finally sit down and come to your senses that hey, you are in control of how you think. It does not matter who hurt you, or what made you this way, it is up to you to decide what you can learn from all of it!

I have wasted many years blaming my parents for passing too early and leaving me and my siblings alone. I have wasted years blaming my past relationships for not being able to think I deserve to have a good one. I have wasted years believing I haven't been a good mother. I have wasted years scurrying into the shadows and just isolating myself and then blaming others because I feel "left out". I have wasted a good many years shrinking because when you're being big and seen, you can feel the hot prodding metal sticks of judgment never realizing I was the one leading the persecution. So many of those years I always saw myself as the victim and never looked in the mirror and see the very one guilty of my own demise.

Well. I am 28, and when you are 28, you start thinking about these things. A midlife self-evaluation if you will. And soon, I will be 30. and then 35, 40, 45, 50... Everything that will happen will be up to me. No one else.

We never run out of life crises, don't we? Might be a good idea to rethink how we see people who are 50. If I would have to go through all that have to be gone through from here on out until I am 50? Wow, They sure are awesome. Old-- but awesome ;) <3

so this is what i say when they ask me what my greatest fear is

God forbid you'll never understand how much I love you. Here I am, looking at you, recounting your gestures of genuine love-- respect. I'm thinking, what do I have to do to stop this? This is the beginning, this is where I am about to lose you. My mind succumbs into a panic, crunching up strategies, holding back tears-- "no, this can't be happening how do I-- what do I---" and amidst all that chaos that is my thoughts, you're just peacefully asleep. When you wake up, all you'll care about will be your games and food. God forbid you'll never understand how much I would sacrifice to shelter you, your innocence and your unbrazen confidence that the world is yours. My dearest boy, forgive me for thinking it is your responsibility to show me that you love me. You don't have to. All I have to do is to love you.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

They all get along except me.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

They'd rather have me away so they can have more fun.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

Bare minimum is alright if it's them, but if I do something wrong or if I fall short for just a moment, I'm a bad sister.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

What's mine is theirs, what's theirs is HANDS OFF

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

It's alright if they insult/disrespect me because I will forgive them anyway, but they sulk and get depressed when I say something as a joke.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

Everything is my fault.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

They are the only ones allowed to be depressed.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I don't get the thank yous

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I organize everything so THEY can have fun

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I should be supportive and understanding during their downtimes, but they are allowed to complain and sigh, and pressure me during mine

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I don't need their help.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I have to be emotionally available to them, but not to myself

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

My authority is equal to what I give. If I fail to give something, I don't have any right.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

When I do something for them, they enjoy the privilege but they "did not ask for it."

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I can't get mad

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I have no one to talk to because that'll be gaslighting

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I cry in quick, short bursts because nobody should see me suffering because then I am making them feel guilty.

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

It's my job...

I'm the eldest sister, of course...

I constantly wish to die
